Ethel June (Mapes) Jorgenson, age 89, of Waterville, KS, passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Community Memorial Hospital in Marysville, KS. She was born June 8, 1928 at home in rural Marshall County, Kansas to Harrison Benjamin Mapes and Pearl (Hulbert) Mapes. She married Maurice Jorgenson on July 15, 1948 in Waterville, KS. He preceded her in death on November 22, 2002.Those that knew her were aware that she went by her middle name of June. If you were lucky enough to be family or friend and you called her by her given name of Ethel the look you received from her reminded you of that preference. June was raised on the farm in Marshall County, just west of Waterville and attended school at Coon Creek School. She was introduced to Maurice in early 1948 and within a few months they were married. This marriage would last 54 years until his passing. They settled on a farm southwest of Barnes, Kansas and would spend over 50 years there, farming some of the ground and raising animals from cows to pigs and for many years, they raised dogs. They moved to Waterville in 1999 to be closer to their sons. Throughout her life she worked in restaurants in the area but was happiest being a housewife, mother and grandmother.Those left to celebrate her life are: sons, Micheal (Cindy) Jorgenson of Waterville, KS; Gary Jorgenson of Marysville, KS; Benjy (Linda) Jorgenson of Randolph, KS; Doug (Nancy) Jorgenson of Waterville, KS; brother, Dean (Ida) Mapes of Guam; sister, Maxine Oatney of Blue Rapids, KS; 5 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Last month she welcomed another generation to her family when great-great-grandson Luke was born.June was preceded by her parents; husband, Maurice; brothers, Delbert Cecil and Harry Mapes; sister, Helen Jensen; and daughter-in-law, Linda Pearl Jorgenson.Funeral Services will be Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 2:00pm at the Terry-Christie Funeral Home in Waterville, KS. With Pastor Debby Dick Officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Waterville. Casket Bearers are Lane Jorgenson, Lindsay Seems, Matthew Jorgenson, Tylene Slingsby, Tasha Jorgenson and Alan Slingsby.
