Donald Everett Liby, age 96 of Manhattan, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born on September 3, 1928, in Miltonvale, the son of Harvey Everett and Cecelia Cordelia (Girard) Liby. Following high school, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War where he was awarded a Bronze Service Star.
He married Marlene Bowser on July 25, 1974, in Morganville. She survives of the home.
Don worked for the Clay Center Street Department from 1953 until 1993 and was a volunteer firefighter for 28 years. He was a member of the Clay Center Elks Club #2253, American Legion Post 227 in Clifton and the VFW Post in Clay Center. Don was a kind, caring, loving, and patient man. He enjoyed hunting, camping, skiing, and spending time with his family. He liked tinkering in his garage, mowing the lawn, and teasing the little ones when they came to visit. The door was always open to anyone. He was always supportive of anything the kiddos wanted to do and if it didn’t go well, he would be right there to pick up the pieces. He led an extraordinary life and will be missed dearly.
In addition to his wife, Marlene Liby, he is survived by one son, Steve Liby and Sandy of Clay Center; one daughter, Julie Timmerman and Wayne of Clay Center; four step children, Waunita Barnes of Havensville, Ilene Carter and Kriss of Neosho Rapids, Arnold Bowser and Debi of Divide, Montana, and Gail Wetter and Bill of Manhattan; one sister, Darlene Randolph of Abilene; eleven grandchildren, Thomas Watt, Jr., Jamie Watt, Mary Watt, Michael Watt, Jonathan Watt, Daniel Bowser, Travis Bowser, Hanna Wetter, Isiah Soto, Jodi McCafferty, and Tori King; seventeen great grandchildren, Kendell, Breckan, Conner, Trenton, Ashton, Trinity, Jacklyn, Vivienne, Abby, Robyn, Charlotte, Junior, Haydyn, Chelsea, Caylee, Sierra, and Wyatt; two great-great grandchildren, Aamir and Jaxton, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, Diane Blattner and Susie Liby; one sister, Marjorie Marcotte; one brother, Bill Liby; three grandsons, Jeff Blattner, Jared Bowser and Michael McCafferty, Jr.; one great grandson, Tommy Watt, III, and two sons-in-law, Bill Watt and Ken Barnes.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 5:00 pm on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 24, 2025, at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home. Burial with Military Honors will be Grandview-Mill Creek Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice. Contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.
