Dorothy Marie Johnson, age 85 of Olsburg, Kansas, died Thursday, April 4, 2013 at the Westy Community Care Home in Westmoreland, Kansas.
She was born on June 12, 1927 in Cleburne, Kansas, the daughter of Frank Wesley and Grace Marie (Churchill) Novak. She grew up in the Cleburne and Olsburg areas, graduating from Olsburg High School.
On June 12, 1945, she was married to Alciede Lavern (A.L.) Johnson and raised seven children on the family farm near Olsburg. She was a member of the Olsburg Lutheran Church.
In 1963, she opened Dot’s Beauty Shop in Olsburg, where she operated it for 41 years before retiring. Some of her favorite past times were spending time with her grandchildren and attending their sporting events and other activities. She loved cooking and baking and enjoyed having the whole family over for big Sunday dinners. She also enjoyed playing cards with her family, gardening, collecting chicken figurines and traveling with her late husband and her sisters.
Later in life, she moved from the farm into Olsburg where she painted many pictures including those of schools and churches in the area.
She was preceded in death by her husband A.L. Johnson; three brothers, an infant, Frank Wesley Novak, Harold (Dick) Novak and Duane Novak and two grandchildren, Scott Christopher Johnson and Cody Ray Johnson.
She is survived by seven children, Jim and Johnson and wife Reona of Olsburg, Bob Johnson and wife Janet of Topeka, Tom Johnson and wife Mary of St. Mary’s, Bill Johnson of Olsburg, Rick Johnson and wife Irene of Olsburg and twins, Sherry Quigley and husband George of Blaine and Terry Johnson of Olsburg; two brothers, John Novak and wife Lois of Iowa and Lester (Pete) Novak and wife Jan of Iowa; four sisters, Betty Schumacher of Wamego, Cleo Hendry and husband Don of Topeka, Ruth Vaughn and husband Jerry of Frankfort and Wendy Pierson and husband Eugene of Meriden and sister-in-law, Dee Novak of Iowa; 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on April 6, 2013 at the Olsburg Lutheran Church in Olsburg, Kansas, with Rev. Gordon Sandquist officiating. Music was furnished by Alice Gibson and Amallissa Johnson. Pallbearers were George Johnson, Kenny Johnson, Jeremy Johnson, Justin Johnson, Shane O’Shea and Leo Finan. Honorary Pallbearers were Alex Chaffetz and Tom Warth. Burial was in the Olsburg Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for the Olsburg Lutheran Church. Contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley, Kansas.
