Elma Jean Wendland, age 87 of Leonardville, passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at the Leonardville Nursing Home.
She was born on October 26, 1927 in Mullinville, Kansas, the daughter of Elmas and Dora (Smith) Scott. She graduated from Centerview High School in 1945.
On September 1, 1950 at Kinsley, Kansas, she was married to Earl Willard Wendland. He preceded her in death on April 9, 2013. They lived in Manhattan and farmed what is currently Cico Park. Later they moved to the Peach Grove community where they farmed and operated a dairy for over 40 years. Elma was a homemaker, but was also a waitress at the Pony Express Truck Stop for ten years.
She was a member of the Fancy Creek Zion United Methodist Church, E.H.U., United Methodist Women and was a 4-H club leader. She enjoyed square dancing, playing cards, reading and most of all spending time with her kids and grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons, Gary Wendland and wife Vicky of Manhattan and Ron Wendland and wife Susan of Leonardville; four daughters, Cindy Johnson and husband Mike of Leonardville, Teresa Baker and husband Dudley of Beatrice, Nebraska, Kathy Wendland of Manhattan and Lisa Dickinson and husband Doug of Glasco; one sister, Pat Allison of Portland Oregon; ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Lorraine Werner, Betty Bergling and Joyce Carney.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, September 14, 2015 at the Leonardville United Methodist Church with Pastors Sandy Ferguson and Kevin Larson officiating. Respect calls may be made anytime Sunday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley. The family will receive friends from 5 until 6:00 P.M. Sunday. Burial will be in the Randolph Fancy Creek Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for the Leonardville Nursing Home. Contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.
