Kathleen Ann Wendland, age 58 of Manhattan, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2019 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House.
She was born on November 16, 1960 in Manhattan, the daughter of Earl Willard and Elma Jean (Scott) Wendland. In 1978, she graduated from Blue Valley Randolph High School where she was class salutatorian. Kathy earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Emporia State University and a Master’s Degree in Education from Kansas State University.
Kathy worked as a teacher at a preschool, which she loved. Also, she bartended at the Cowboy Palace and the American Legion. Next she was an assistant manager for Dara’s.
She attended the First United Methodist Church. Kathy loved to read any kind of book, especially mysteries. Watching all sports was a passion of hers and she loved talking about it with her family. In her early years, she was involved in 4-H and showed swine and dairy cattle along with cooking and sewing. She had a passion for learning and British history was a favorite. She was able to travel to Europe and visit London. Kathy’s kindness and smile lit a room. She loved to have a great debate about sports and politics. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by two brothers, Gary Wendland and wife Vicky of Manhattan and Ron Wendland and wife Susan of Leonardville; three sisters, Cindy Johnson and husband Mike of Leonardville, Teresa Baker and husband Dudley of Beatrice, Nebraska and Lisa Dickinson and husband Doug of Glasco and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2019 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home with Pastor Sandy Ferguson officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Friday. Inurnment will be in the Randolph Fancy Creek Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in Kathy’s name to the Manhattan Public Library or PBS. Contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.
