Lois E. Sylvester, age 86, of Clay Center, Kansas, a former resident of Riley, Kansas, died Monday, September 17, 2012, at Medicalodge of Clay Center, Kansas.
She was born March 24, 1926, the youngest of nine children, on the family farm east of Riley, Kansas, the daughter of Zephry and Lois (Meek) Noland. She grew up in Riley and Nemaha Counties and graduated from Centralia High School with the Class of 1943.
Lois had taught in one room country schools and helped her husband farm. She had cooked for several different fraternity houses at KSU and cooked at the College Hill Nursing and obtained her dietary degree. She had worked at several nursing homes as a dietary supervisor before retiring. She was a member of the Riley United Methodist Church.
She was married on May 8, 1948 to Ernest Sylvester. He preceded her in death on September 27, 2007.
She is survived by one son, James Sylvester and wife Tammy of Clay Center, Kansas; four grandchildren, Amanda Kay Gill and husband Robert of Arkansas City, Kansas, Dustin Sylvester of Lawrence, Kansas, Amanda Rothfuss of Carlsbad, New Mexico, Christopher Reed of Clay Center, Kansas, and 8 great grandchildren.
A funeral service was held on Thursday, September 20, 2012, at the Riley United Methodist Church in Riley, Kansas, with Rev. Bill Eisele and Pastor Kevin Larson officiating. Music was furnished by Cheryl Van Bebber and Marilyn Johnson. Pallbearers Dustin Sylvester, Robert Gill, Chris Reed, Bob Kirtley, Ralph Lee, Jim Noland and Dilen Gill. Burial was in the Riley Cemetery. The Holmes-Pfeifley Funeral Home of Riley, Kansas was in charge of arrangements.
